WHY ESSENTIAL:
Columbia University’s boxy auditorium is the CBGB of contemporary classical music: an uninspiring facility (albeit one with nontoxic bathrooms) that has become iconic through the consistent audacity and inspiration of its musical offerings. Eggheads and backpackers comfortably commingle in Miller audiences. So where’s the T-shirt?
The secret:
According to theater director George Steel, the best seats in the house are in the middle orchestra, row F, right behind the railing. Not only are the sight lines great in this location, he says, but these seats are in front of the overhang of the balcony, which makes the acoustics ideal. Plus, there’s plenty of legroom—and seats available for upcoming performances! Despite all this, we hear there’s a Times music critic who prefers the fourth row of the balcony. The concept of this piece, as described, is excellent; the execution is terrible and misleading (per the description, anyway–it would have been a fine article properly described). A tip would be, for example: "order X at Pearl Oyster Bar, it's not on the menu, it's excellent, and you have to request it." Or a reservation password or somesuch.
