    Time Out New York / Issue 632 : Nov 8–14, 2007
    Navigate NYC

    How to navigate NYC

A better guide to getting from A to B, including tips for mastering the subway, taxi dead zones and the West Village (seriously, W 4th intersects W 10th?!)

Below you’ll find loads of great advice on the best routes through the city. If we haven't helped you with your transit quandary, send your problem starting and ending point to route@timeoutny.com, and check our blog for additional ongoing advice.

How to rule the subway: Before you swipe, memorize these tips from the pros (yeah, there are subway pros) to maximize your ride. Plus, view photos of the subway through its history.
Which route is faster?: Sometimes, you’ve got two options to get to where you’re going. We tested a few common situations to find out which is faster.
Do you know your subway ads?: You see them every day, but do you pay attention?
A subway map of the future?: One man dares to imagine a easier way to make train routes intelligible. Downloadable KICK map available here.
Where to catch a cab ...in the city’s worst spots, according to the drivers themselves.
Avoid these taxi dead zones: We’ve mapped them out, with advice on better alternatives.
How to hail a black car: They aren’t sketchy if you know how to use them.
When to take a pedicab: There are times when they make sense—honest.
Twenty meter dash: We took 20 cab rides during rush hour between Port Authority and Alphabet City—and endured 457minutes of crappy NBC videos to find out why drivers go the way they go.Includes downloadable bonus advice.
When the bus is faster: Yeah, you’re thinking: Never! But there are some times when traveling above ground behooves you (assuming things are running on schedule, of course).
Master the West Village: Constantly confused by those pesky named streets? Think of it as a mini Manhattan and you’ll never get lost again.
The airport trip timer: We monitored real-time traffic and mind-melded with street-smart expert Gridlock Sam to find out exactly how long it takes to get there, on weekdays.

I come from eastern LI. I often take the AirTrain to JFK from LIRR Jamaica. How can I get to LaGuardia from Jamaica?

On the latest issue of Time Out you refers to the "West Village". There is no West Village as there is no East Village. There is only a Greenwich Village and a Lower East Side. The name East Village is an invention of the realestate industry.
