Lined with hat and leather shops, Orchard Street still hosts mom-and-pop places that have been around for ages. You can score two intricately woven (or so they appear) pashmina scarves for $8 total at Fashion & Fashion Ladies Apparel (160 Orchard St between Rivington and Stanton Sts, 212-473-0209). Or appeal to eco-warriors with this camo-flecked, faux-fur lined topper ($20) from World Hats (130 Orchard St between Delancey and Rivington Sts, no phone).

Intricate rings and earrings in bright yellow gold can set you back thousands at the jewelry shops that populate the Jackson Heights Little India of 74th Street, but there are tons of equally vibrant baubles for $10 and under. One set of traditional bangles (50 for about $10) from Chahat Fashions (37-50 74th St between 37th Ave and 37th Rd, 718-335-1295) can be partitioned into many gifts—just tie sets of eight together with ribbon. Adorable gold pendants bedecked with enamel images of Shiva and Ganesh will set you back just $3 each at Butala Emporium (37-46 74th St between 37th Ave and 37th Rd, 718-899-5590).

The area around Herald Square is loaded with wholesale jewelry joints, most of which happily sell things retail. These bangles (above) look like fancy Lucite, but they’re really just undulating plastic—and are only $7.50 apiece at Full-Line Accessories (67 W 36th St at Sixth Ave, 212-967-5327). Modeled after Pegasus wings, these simple gold earrings appeal to minimalists and die-hard trend-hunters alike. They’re $8 (though everything is 30 percent off through the end of the year) at Cinderella Club (242 W 36th St between Seventh and Eighth Aves, 212-629-6772).

Vibrant tchotchkes are mainstays of Chinatown—and perfect for stuffing into stockings. These butterfly-inspired kites are $15.50 at Pearl River (477 Broadway between Broome and Grand Sts, 212-431-4770). And there’s an entire wall of exotic teas—most of them packaged in ornate canisters that double as useful storage ($2.50 each)—in the basement of New Kan Man (200 Canal St at Mulberry St, 212-571-0330), a beloved grocery and home-accessories emporium.
