    SANDWICHES

Roast beef, mozzarella and fried-eggplant hero at Defonte’s Sandwich Shop Play hooky from work to wolf down this weekday-lunchtime-only sub, a forearm-size roll stuffed with homemade roast beef, fried eggplant and fresh mozzarella. 379 Columbia St at Luquer St, Red Hook, Brooklyn (718-625-8052). Small $7.75; large $9.50.

Meatball banh mi at Ba Xuyên Abandon that Subway meatball hero for a subversive, Vietnamese take: pork-and-onion balls on a toasted baguette topped with pickled veggies, cilantro and jalapeños. 4222 Eighth Ave at 42nd St, Sunset Park, Brooklyn (718-633-6601). $3.50.

Roti stuffed with channa and potatoes at Nio’s Trinidad Roti Shop This Trinidadian canteen has mastered the roti, a dinner-plate-size flatbread stuffed with split peas. Request baby-soft potatoes and channa (chickpea curry) for one fine mess. 2702 Church Ave at Rogers Ave, East Flatbush, Brooklyn (718-287-9848). $4.50.

Super Heeb sandwich at Russ & Daughters Horseradish cream cheese, wasabi-flavored roe and sublime whitefish salad come together in a holy trinity with an unholy name. Quite possibly the best thing ever to happen to Houston Street, let alone a bagel. 179 E Houston St between Allen and Orchard Sts (212-475-4880). $9.45.

Cubano at Margon Join the midtown drones mobbing this narrow lunch counter. Roasted pork, Swiss cheese, salami, ham, sliced pickles and mayo (ask for hot sauce) are toasted on a foil-covered sandwich press, creating a crusty gut-buster. 136 W 46th St between Sixth and Seventh Aves (212-354-5013). $5.
