    Time Out New York / Issue 639 : Dec 27, 2007–Jan 2, 2008
    100 best food and drink

    The ultimate bread basket

We mixed and matched our favorite carbs. Bring on the butter, fat boy!

    Photograph: Ben Goldstein

    1. Challah at Israel Beigel Baking Co.
Arrive after dark (any night but Friday—it’s Shabbes!) and get this warm challah under the table. 372 South 4th St at Hooper St, Williamsburg, Brooklyn (718-388-4031). $2.25.

    2. Ciabatta at Mazzola Bakery
Porous, pillowy bread jacketed in a hearty, flour-dusted crust—we love this neighborhood mainstay. 192 Union St at Henry St, Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn (718-643-1719). $1.90.

    3. Semolina raisin-fennel bread from Amy’s Bread
Studded with golden raisins and fennel seeds and coated in cornmeal, it’s as good as cake. Various locations (amysbread.com). $4.50.

    4. Everything bagel at Absolute Bagels
This family-run racket’s everything bagel with scallion cream cheese? Way better than H&H. 2788 Broadway between 107th and 108th Sts (212-932-2052). Baker’s dozen $9.

    5. Croissants at Patisserie Claude
It’s like butter, butter…and more butter in these, made fresh daily by New York’s favorite lovably crusty baker. 187 W 4th St between Barrow and Jones Sts (212-255-5911). $1.70.

6, 7. Garlic bread at BLT Market
Our favorite food at this superpricey restaurant is the gratis bread that kicks off the meal. A Sullivan Street Bakery stirato loaf (not unlike a demi baguette) with a crackling crust comes sheathed in a paper bag. A mélange of parsley, garlic, butter and shallots saturates every bite. Ritz Carlton New York, 1430 Sixth Ave at Central Park South (212-521-6125). For another fine freebie, try the sister spot’s Gruyère popover. BLT Steak, 106 E 57th St at Park Ave (212-752-7470)

    8. Apricot-hazelnut parisienne at Silver Moon Bakery
A toothsome white-and-rye-flour flute gets an extra dose of goodness from hazelnuts and dried apricots. Subtle yet substantial, it’s perfect for soaking up a café au lait. 2740 Broadway at 105 St (212-866-4717). $4.25.
