    New ways to work out

Where to lift weights—and compete in a cage match, cheerlead or train like Randy Moss. Your localized guide to the freshest gyms and techniques, with programs low-key, intense, hard-core or your choice of all three.

    Complete Body Development

The deep-pocketed will be tempted to splurge on this training-only gym’s new Lifeline Package, a $3,999 eight-week course designed by founder Alex Reznik. The package includes eight massages or facials, personal training sessions three times per week and appointments with a nutritionist. If you don’t have the cash for such an undertaking, the gym offers a 30-minute executive workout ($50), an intense session incorporating kettlebells, rock climbing, stretching, martial arts or boxing.
Rates: Per month $89 plus $249 initiation fee with a yearlong commitment; $99 per month without commitment. 80 John St between Gold and William Sts, No. 1 (212-248-3030)

    Oishi Judo Club

“This is the prettiest dojo I have ever had,” says studio owner Shiro Oishi, who moved to a former theater on Greenwich Street in June after being on Leonard Street for 20 years (dude’s been around for a while—he played a henchman in Black Rain!). Oishi offers straightforward lessons in judo to “everyone, from five-year-olds to old people—as long as they can still walk—and of all nationalities and skill levels.”
Rates: 20 classes for $450, ten for $225. 547 Greenwich St between Charlton and Vandam Sts (212-966-6850)

Battery Park Swim & Fitness Center

The four-lane pool, steam room and sauna have all been given recent face-lifts at this neighborhood fitness center, which still has gorgeous views of the river. The gym recently introduced a Pilates reformer ($75 for an hour-long private session). Meanwhile, visit the space on Tuesday 15 (6–8:30pm) for a health fair where you can get a free chair massage and consult with nutritionists, chiropractors and other health professionals about your well-being.
Rates: per month $65–$75, per year $820, residents per year $740. 375 South End Ave between Liberty and Albany Sts, entrance in the 400 building inside Gateway Plaza (212-321-1117)
