CLAIM: “BEST PORK SANDWICH”
Park Slope joint Bar BQ (689 Sixth Ave at 20th St, Park Slope, Brooklyn; 718-499-4872, brooklynbarbq.com) asserts that it has ALWAYS THE BEST PORK SANDWICH ANYWHERE. TONY pitted the sammy ($9) in a blind taste test against two competitors. The judges were local connoisseurs Eliot Krimsky, a music teacher, and barista Mike Johnson, whom we found already chowing down at Bar BQ . These amateur critics—although Johnson claims to have taste-tested strawberry milk before—gave each sandwich a thorough examination.
We started with the so-called superlative from Bar BQ, but neither the heaps of slow-cooked pork nor the variety of accompanying sauces swayed our judges, who described the meat as both “dry and greasy.”
“It seems like they didn’t put a lot of care into the sandwich,” Johnson said. After a few more bites, though, Krimsky started to come around: “I’m enjoying it a lot more. When you put the sauce on, the sandwich sort of breaks up, and it softens it up.”
Both judges had raves for the roasted pork torta ($5.25) from Tacos Nuevo Mexico (489 Fifth Ave between 11th and 12 Sts, Park Slope, Brooklyn; 718-832-0050). “It’s great with the vegetables, onions, hot peppers and tomatoes,” Johnson noted. “It’s unique, too,” added Krimsky, who compared its mayo-and-veg presentation to a Cuban sandwich. “I’ve never had anything quite like this before.”
The clear winner, however, was a BBQ pulled-pork sandwich ($6) from Bonnie’s Grill (278 Fifth Ave between Garfield Pl and 1st St, Park Slope, Brooklyn; 718-369-9527). Our judges effusively described its high-caliber execution, served on a thick bun and soaked in sauce. “This is incredible,” gushed Krimsky. “Amazing, so much juicier. It’s everything the Bar BQ one was trying to be.” Johnson added, “It’s simple but really flavorful. Yeah, this is the best by far.”

Worst article ever. You're not comparing apples to apples here (cue to cue). Once that Bonnie's pork has red sauce on it, it's become a BBQ sandwich, a staple in many school lunchroom cafeterias - something completely different. I had the Bar BQ pulled pork yesterday - best ever - anywhere - nyc or Carolina. Moist and awesome flavor - don't need sauce - but the spicy vinegar kicked ass. If you want sublime smokey pork, Bar BQ is the place, if you want a torta or something else, then haves those.
