    Time Out New York / Issue 611 : Jun 14–20, 2007

    How to: Redo your loo

With $80, some pot and some pizza—plus a little help from Neck Face, SeMeN SPeRmS and Eric Elms—interior designer Rafael de Cárdenas turns a girly bathroom into, well, something else entirely.

    After
    Before

It started with a challenge: Could young interior-design star Rafael de Cárdenas, who has turned out spaces for everyone from Parker Posey to the shop A New York Thing, completely transform a fairly feminine bathroom for under $100?

Apparently, nobig thing: After determining a color scheme (white, black, gold and shots of superhotpink) and a theme (Peeping Tom), De Cárdenas unleashed some of his frequentcollaborators on the space. Graffiti artist Neck Face, world famous for his childliketag and terrifying yet sort-of-sweet monsters (his pieces have sold for thousandsof dollars), edged a delicate border of diamonds along the tile before administeringmurals on every wall (one creature says keep it clean, another—on the windowof the shower—exclaims i see you!). Simon Curtis (otherwise known as SeMeNSPeRmS), a DJ at spots like the Beatrice Inn and the creative director of Aaron Bondaroff’s(a.k.a. A-Ron the Don) new venture Community Approved Productions, deposited hissignature spermatozoids on the cabinets (with paint) and on the ceiling (with a Biclighter) before etching you look ugly into the medicine-cabinet mirror (with a grindstone).Meanwhile, designer Eric Elms, who’s done work for companies such as Supremeand Nike, painted a bloodshot eye on a shower curtain and layered it against a second, graphic hot-pink liner, before replicating the image on the light fixture and trashcan.

It’s thesort of room that you wouldn’t possibly want to take a bath in—withouta Klonopin. But it’s pretty amazing, too. A-Ron perhaps said it best: “Doyou know how many guys are going to want to go home with this girl just to see herbathroom?” And as for her security deposit? Per De Cárdenas: “Tellher to auction off the door.”
