Get well soon
Jammyland, one of Manhattan’s most thorough reggae retailers, is all about good vibes, but something evil lurks in its basement. Hospital Productions—a label that’s also become a new, bunker-style record shop specializing in noise, black metal, power electronics and little else—doesn’t have its own entrance; you have to walk through Jammyland (at 60 East 3rd Street between First and Second Avenues) and down a ladder in the back. Once inside Hospital, you’ll find a surprisingly amiable staff and an impressive selection (from Wolf Eyes and Sonic Youth side projects to Anaal Nathrakh and Burzum) curated by owner Dominick Fernow, better known as the noise artist Prurient. The store, whose launch coincided with last month’s maniacally noisy No Fun Fest at the Hook in Brooklyn, is generally open from 1 to 8pm during the week, and until 10pm on Friday and Saturday. You can also find Hospital online at hospitalproductions.com, or via phone at 212-614-9652. But if this kind of music appeals to you, put on sensible shoes and pay a visit.—Hank Shteamer
