Growing up Korean-American, I was blessed with parents who weren’t afraid to leave a layer of dead skin floating in the hot tub. Oddly, I’ve always shied away from removing layers of dermis in public, opting to exfoliate in the shower using a Korean or Japanese shower towel. Though it might feel as harsh as sandpaper, the Asian bath accoutrement softens in warm water so the nylon feels more like a gentle buff than scraping yourself with a piece of shale. To get a proper scrub in the shower, lay the towel over your shoulder to get it damp before lathering it up using a bar of soap—preferably a gentle moisturizing type such as Dove. (You can also use shower gel, but you will have to use double your normal amount.) Moving in short circular strokes, work the towel or gloves all over your body, using the length of the towel to get hard-to-reach places like your back.
