    Time Out New York / Issue 654 : Apr 9–15, 2008

The new stars of musical theater

Not content to stick to tradition, a fresh generation of composing talent comes from some very strange places.

THE COMEDIANS: When a Daily Show writer and a pop-rocker write a musical, there’s bound to be laughs—and skeptical fans.
THE MONOGAMIST: This year, the prolific Peter Mills brings you Shakespeare-turned-Kurosawa. Next year? On to something completely different.
THE AVANT-GARDIST: Brendan Connelly may be a new-music nerd, but there’s nothing wimpy about his fearless adaptation of Macbeth.
THE ANTHROPOLOGIST: Michael Friedman flaunts mad songwriting skills with catchy tunes about sex, teens and Jesus for his new project, Saved.
Spring theater for 2008: This season’s got some promising shows in store.
