The beloved Body & Soul tea dance ended its run as a weekly a half-decade ago, but the ardor it generated hasn’t abated a whit. That’s evident not only from the insanely packed one-offs that the party’s residents—Joe Claussell, Danny Krivit and François K—occasionally toss, but also from the B&S mix-CDs that fans snap up. Judging from the quality on display in volume five of the series, the team isn’t even close to running out inspiration—or great music.
The music that Body & Soul favors is usually referred to as “spiritual house,” a term connoting tunes stuffed with either emotional content or just lots of bongos and congas. But however it’s defined, the term hardly does justice to the B&S sound. Part of the fun of listening to this new mix is divining who selected what. An Afro-Cuban jam like DJ Oji’s “Esteban”? That’d be Claussell. The smooth R&B-derived mood piece “The Light,” by Raw Artistic Soul? Probably Krivit’s choice. The gentle tech-funk stylings of Carl Craig on his beautiful “Sandstorms”? That’s got to be François. But the real joy of the CD, as it is at the party itself, lies in hearing the three masters construct a meaningful, eloquent set out of these disparate parts, rather than the haphazard series of songs that tag-teaming DJ crews often create. It’s not quite the same experience as actually dancing in a club packed with sweaty revelers, but until the next Body & Soul party pops up, this mix will do quite nicely.

A highly rated release and not only in my book, but right across the global house scene - the fifth release in a series of Body & Soul themed mixes by Francois K. Danny Krivit and Joe Claussell - the NY based trio behind the club nights of the same name - since his early days Francois K. who started out by drumming on his kit at the Paradise Garage as Larry Levan, seen as the godfather of house dj's by many - these mixes are often more of a story than just a plain series of club tracks - HOT !
