François K’s echo-fixated imprint drops a billowing and beautiful dub-house concoction, crafted by South African studio whiz Brendon Moeller. Like much of the producer’s Beat Pharmacy output (as well as his work under the Echologist moniker), “Drifter” takes the basic dub-house mold—thick kick, subsonic bass, that familiar boinging sound and mountains of reverb—and grounds it with melody, in this case supplied by Hammond organ, muted trumpet and an army of synths. The dub mix loses much of the tuneful elements, retaining only the ghostly aura of the trumpet; the Drifting Drums version strips even that scintilla of instrumentation, leaving behind a deeply hypnotic, swirling eddy of inner-space sound.
