59E59 Theater C
WHY ESSENTIAL:
The tiniest of 59E59’s spaces, Theater C can’t accommodate every group that comes along, but when the right minimalist vision meets this intimate black box, the results can be delightful. There was director Joe Tantalo’s red-hot adaptation of Fahrenheit 451 last year; in May, Brits Off Broadway’s The Receipt conjured microtheatrical magic using sound effects and strategically placed figurines. Shows like these prove that holes-in-the-wall aren’t just for solos anymore.
The secret:
Theater C has a painfully overzealous air-conditioning system, which is really kind of funny given that most 60-seat theaters in New York have no AC at all. Exec producer Peter Tear says that in the summer he tells the staff to reserve him a “hot seat” before the house opens for the show. That’s his code name for the only seat in the theater that doesn’t have the AC blowing on it. He opts for it “so as not to get an arctic gale breathing down my neck.” Ask the ushers for the “hot seat” so you can feel for yourself. 59 E 59th St between Madison and Park Aves (212-753-5959)

Josh, it is true. X is not on the menu.
I am really upset that Time Out printed my secret website for everybody to see. gugunnameable is so secret, you can't even view it on a regular computer -- the secret password is
www.unnameablebooks.net

The concept of this piece, as described, is excellent; the execution is terrible and misleading (per the description, anyway–it would have been a fine article properly described). A tip would be, for example: "order X at Pearl Oyster Bar, it's not on the menu, it's excellent, and you have to request it." Or a reservation password or somesuch.

How is this an "ultra-valuable tip?" It's not even a "tip," it's a piece of trivia.
