WHY ESSENTIAL:
With nearly 22,000 titles, MoMA boasts one of the largest film collections in the world. Its state-of-the-art theaters aren’t too shabby either—between the two of ’em, some 600 filmgoers can enjoy both classics (like those in the current “Spain [Un]Censored” series, featuring flicks made under General Francisco Franco’s 36-year dictatorship) and groundbreaking goodies (the ongoing experimental showcase “Modern Mondays”).

Many filmic greats (including Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen and Mel Brooks) spent their formative years frequenting the Titus 1. The concept of this piece, as described, is excellent; the execution is terrible and misleading (per the description, anyway–it would have been a fine article properly described). A tip would be, for example: "order X at Pearl Oyster Bar, it's not on the menu, it's excellent, and you have to request it." Or a reservation password or somesuch.
