    Essential secrets

What the guidebooks won’t tell you

Our editors chose the city’s most vital places, people and things—and then tracked down un-Googleable, ultra-valuable tips about each. Plus some quizzes to see what you already know.

    The LGBT Community Center

    WHY ESSENTIAL:
Many seasoned queers take this place for granted, but without the largely volunteer-operated support system, there would be no Gender Identity Project, no Center Kids program or National Archive of LGBT History, no Promote the Vote campaign, no Lesbian Cancer Initiative or Center Voices Presents series—not to mention no venue for the 300 or so groups that meet here every week. The Center is, quite simply, a labor of love. So love it back, queen!

    The secret:
Artist Keith Haring was deeply involved with the Center in the 1980s. During a fund-raiser on May 27, 1989, Haring and 50 other artists decided to paint every room in the building in honor of the 20th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. For his part, Haring tackled a 12' x 8' x 25' chunk of ceiling and upper walls in a men’s bathroom on the second floor, a space that is now used mostly for storage. If you get the chance, feast your eyes on the Once Upon a Time mural; you’ll spy giant cocks aplenty, and Haring’s signature figures knocking boots in every way imaginable. 208 W 13th St between Seventh and Eighth Aves (212-620-7310, gaycenter.org)

Josh, it is true. X is not on the menu. I am really upset that Time Out printed my secret website for everybody to see. gugunnameable is so secret, you can't even view it on a regular computer -- the secret password is www.unnameablebooks.net

The concept of this piece, as described, is excellent; the execution is terrible and misleading (per the description, anyway–it would have been a fine article properly described). A tip would be, for example: "order X at Pearl Oyster Bar, it's not on the menu, it's excellent, and you have to request it." Or a reservation password or somesuch.

How is this an "ultra-valuable tip?" It's not even a "tip," it's a piece of trivia.
