Gotham Chamber Opera
WHY ESSENTIAL:
Lincoln Center boasts two of the world’s most famous opera companies, and there are more such groups all over town. But in the seven years since it was founded, Neal Goren’s Gotham Chamber Opera has cemented a well-deserved reputation for solid casting, adventurous programming and crafty productions.
The secret:
In order for director-conductor Goren to fit the maximum number of players into the small orchestra pit at the Henry Street Settlement, he must perch precariously on the smallest possible podium—which is 18 inches square and two feet high. The orchestra is terrified for—and of—him. “One false move,” says Goren, “and I’d tumble into a violinist. It has nearly happened.” The Playhouse, Abrons Arts Center, 466 Grand St at Pitt St (212-598-0400)

Josh, it is true. X is not on the menu.
I am really upset that Time Out printed my secret website for everybody to see. gugunnameable is so secret, you can't even view it on a regular computer -- the secret password is

The concept of this piece, as described, is excellent; the execution is terrible and misleading (per the description, anyway–it would have been a fine article properly described). A tip would be, for example: "order X at Pearl Oyster Bar, it's not on the menu, it's excellent, and you have to request it." Or a reservation password or somesuch.

How is this an "ultra-valuable tip?" It's not even a "tip," it's a piece of trivia.
