The Black Gay and Lesbian Archive at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture
WHY ESSENTIAL:
The pet project of Harlem writer and editor Steven G. Fullwood, the archive was started in 2000 to document LGBT life for people of color. And since 2004, the holdings—books, magazines, original flyers and manuscripts—have been housed in the distinguished Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, part of the NYPL system. Now anyone can explore this rarely told history.
The secret:
Buried deep within the collection is a chilling special-edition monograph titled Rape, which dates to the 1950s. The sexually graphic comic was created by an unknown artist, and explores what Fullwood calls “white gay desire for black male bodies.” The brief narrative follows the exploits of two black males and a white rapist by the name of Frank Sinatra. Explains Fullwood, “The action is brief and brutal but poignant, and offers scholars ways to image how power, desire and race intersected prior to Stonewall.” 515 Malcolm X Blvd (Lenox Ave) between 135th and 136th Sts (212-491-2200, nypl.org)

Josh, it is true. X is not on the menu.
I am really upset that Time Out printed my secret website for everybody to see. gugunnameable is so secret, you can't even view it on a regular computer -- the secret password is
www.unnameablebooks.net

The concept of this piece, as described, is excellent; the execution is terrible and misleading (per the description, anyway–it would have been a fine article properly described). A tip would be, for example: "order X at Pearl Oyster Bar, it's not on the menu, it's excellent, and you have to request it." Or a reservation password or somesuch.

How is this an "ultra-valuable tip?" It's not even a "tip," it's a piece of trivia.
