    Essential secrets

What the guidebooks won’t tell you

Our editors chose the city’s most vital places, people and things—and then tracked down un-Googleable, ultra-valuable tips about each. Plus some quizzes to see what you already know.

    Seaport Music Fest

    WHY ESSENTIAL:
People think the warm season means SummerStage and Celebrate Brooklyn. But as those two behemoths wrestle with trying to be too many things to too many people, the Seaport Music Fest has simply started presenting big names of the indie world, for free, on Friday nights, in one of the nicest settings to be had.

    The secret:
“Paul Simon attended the very first Seaport show, featuring Polyphonic Spree in 2002,” says producer Stephen Dima. “He and four other people made up the entire audience—there were more people onstage than on the pier. As we watched, we knew the venue was both surreal and special…we simply had to build awareness and a reputation. We achieved both this past summer. It’s a beautiful thing seeing some 6,000 to 10,000-plus NYC music fans come out to support each band.” South Street Seaport, Pier 17, Fulton St at South St (seaportmusicfestival.com)

Josh, it is true. X is not on the menu. I am really upset that Time Out printed my secret website for everybody to see. gugunnameable is so secret, you can't even view it on a regular computer -- the secret password is www.unnameablebooks.net

The concept of this piece, as described, is excellent; the execution is terrible and misleading (per the description, anyway–it would have been a fine article properly described). A tip would be, for example: "order X at Pearl Oyster Bar, it's not on the menu, it's excellent, and you have to request it." Or a reservation password or somesuch.

How is this an "ultra-valuable tip?" It's not even a "tip," it's a piece of trivia.
