The Brick
WHY ESSENTIAL:
Since 2002, this cozy little nook has been helping to fill the experimental-theater void that the douche-bagification of the Lower East Side (Ludlow Street et al.) created. Its crazy-like-a-fox summer festivals ($ellout, Moral Values and Hell) and adventurous vibe have attracted insanely good talent and put the theater at the forefront of Williamsburg’s alterna-stage scene.
The secret:
The Brooklyn theater contains a two-by-two-inch peephole next to its front sign. The tiny window once revealed the whole theater at a glance, but a closet has since been built behind it, obscuring the view of the stage. During the Moral Values Festival, the peephole (then named “The Moral Peep Hole”) revealed a view of a mechanical, life-size Santa in the closet, jacking off to a TV that played Beyond the Valley of the Dolls on a loop. The closet has remained an obscurity ever since, however. “We never discuss it and it never becomes an element of the theatrical scene,” says co–artistic director Michael Gardner. “It has been a disappointment as a make-out closet at Brick parties.” 575 Metropolitan Ave between Union Ave and Lorimer St, Williamsburg (718-907-6189)

Josh, it is true. X is not on the menu.
I am really upset that Time Out printed my secret website for everybody to see. gugunnameable is so secret, you can't even view it on a regular computer -- the secret password is
www.unnameablebooks.net

The concept of this piece, as described, is excellent; the execution is terrible and misleading (per the description, anyway–it would have been a fine article properly described). A tip would be, for example: "order X at Pearl Oyster Bar, it's not on the menu, it's excellent, and you have to request it." Or a reservation password or somesuch.

How is this an "ultra-valuable tip?" It's not even a "tip," it's a piece of trivia.
