TREATS
Cheese grits at Egg The folks at this Williamsburg breakfast spot blend four ingredients to create porridge to end all porridges: deliciously corny organic Anson Mills grits, Ronnybrook cream, a dash of salt and aged Grafton Village Cheddar so sharp it’d make the Cream of Wheat guy cry. 135A North 5th St at Bedford St, Williamsburg, Brooklyn (718-302-5151). $4.
Nettlesome cheese from Valley Shepherd Creamery At Valley Shepherd Creamery in Long Valley, New Jersey, cheese maker Eran Wajswol makes this semifirm sheep’s- and cow’s-milk specimen chock-full of imported nettles. It’s smooth and rich, with a vegetal complexity. (valleyshepherd.com). $18 per pound.
Potato knish at Knish Nosh The hefty pastries from this stalwart are commendable for their floury, elastic dough and the homespun mashed-potato-and-onion filling (you can catch Knish Nosh employees peeling their veggies in the back daily). 100-30 Queens Blvd at 67th Ave, Forest Hills, Queens (718-897-4456). $2.50.
Pretzel chicken at Supersol Like greasy chicken fingers, but coated in Rold Golds—and kosher! 661 Amsterdam Ave between 92nd and 93rd (212-222-6332). $4.
Bread at Del Posto Free. Lard. Bread. 85 Tenth Ave between 15th and 16th Sts (212-497-8090)
100-cheese fondue at Artisanal It’s the best place in town to find an authentic Alpine bowl of hot dipping cheese, including a remarkably harmonious version that combines 100 cheeses of wonderfully variable stink. Park Ave between 32nd and 33rd Sts (212-725-8585). $24–$40.
Popcorn at the IFC Center Organic kernels are popped in canola oil, lightly salted and bathed in real melted butter. Top it off with a shake of Old Bay seasoning and be on your way—you needn’t be a ticket-holder to score the snack. 323 Sixth Ave between 3rd and 4th Sts (212-924-7771). Medium popcorn: $4.75.
Greek yogurt from Kesso Foods Though it doesn’t tout its homegrown credentials, this peerless Greek yogurt is made right here in Queens. The product is superb: tangy, rich and incredibly thick, and best with honey and walnuts. Kesso Foods, 7720 21st Ave between 77th and 78th Sts, East Elmhurst, Queens (718-777-5303). The Yoghurt Place II, 71 Sullivan St between Broome and Spring Sts (212-219-3500). Also available at Fairway and Whole Foods. $4.50.
