DESSERTS
Whoopie pie at Baked Sweet freaks could die happy after a single mouth-stretching bite of this two-hands-necessary take on the classic. Soft cake envelopes a thick dollop of creamy filling. 359 Van Brunt St between Dikeman and Wolcott Sts, Red Hook, Brooklyn (718-222-0345). $2.50.
Doughnut at Doughnut Plant These bubbly yeasted and killer cake doughnuts are the best organic goodies ever thrown into a fryer. 379 Grand St between Essex and Norfolk Sts (212-505-3700). $2.50.
S&S Cheesecake The best in the country is at S&S (large $20; small $11), produced for the past 40 years in a tiny hole-in-the-wall factory in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx. The cake is rich but not heavy, sweet but not cloying, creamy but not artery-clogging: It’s perfection and—sorry, Junior’s—inimitable. 222 W 238th St at Review Pl, Bronx; (718-549-3888). Also available at the two delis next to S&S on 238th St; and served by the slice at Peter Luger and Palm 2.
Mint-chocolate dessert at Park Avenue Winter Pastry chef Richard Leach put together a better-than–Thin Mint mint-chocolate trio (available only in the summer) at Park Avenue Winter: Flourless chocolate cake topped with fresh peppermint foam; peppermint ganache rolled in crunchy chocolate crumbs; and a peppermint mousse Popsicle coated in bittersweet chocolate. 100 E 63rd St between Park and Lexington Aves (212-644-1900). $13.
Frozen yogurt with mochi at /eks/ Red Mango, Pinkberry—whatever. If you really want to eat local (and eat well), consider making /eks/ your Korean froyo of choice. Owner Neo Kim opened his flagship store in Billyburg, and unlike his competitors, you don’t have to stand in line forever to get served. 488 Driggs Ave between North 9th and 10th Sts, Williamsurg, Brooklyn (718-599-1706). Medium yogurt: $6.34.
Millirahmstrudel at Café Sabarsky Sour cream, cream, butter and egg yolks are essential to the making of millirahmstrudel (sometimes called milchrahmstrudel), which is not so much a typically flaky and fruity strudel than it is a thin-skinned vanilla cream sausage ready to burst with LDL-levels-be-damned goodness. 1048 Fifth Ave at 82nd St (212-288-0665). $5.
Red-velvet cake at Cake Man Raven The Technicolor hue is part of the charm. But what we enjoy most is the taste. The cake is just the right balance of fluffy and dense, with a touch of gravitas lent by the addition of buttermilk and cocoa to the batter. Peaks of cream-cheese frosting hide the sinful core—if barely. 708A Fulton St at South Oxford St, Fort Greene, Brooklyn (718-694-2253). $6 per slice. View recipe
