    100 best food and drink

    One for the road

A great drink may not be enough to lure you away from your usual haunts, but how ’bout a drink and an activity? Now you have no excuse.

The drink: The Hemingway (light rum, lime, sugar, grapefruit juice and maraschino liqueur) at Socialista. 505 West St between Horatio and Jane Sts (212-929-4303). $16.
The outing: Socialista’s restaurant is far easier to get into than the lounge, and the drink is just $12 here. Pair it with a similarly citrusy ceviche dish, like the scallop crudo ($10).

The drink: Caraway-infused aquavit at Aquavit. 65 E 55th St at Park Ave (212-593-0287). $7.
The outing: Get your Nordic juices flowing at Scandinavia House (58 Park Ave between 37th and 38th Sts, 212-879-9779). View recipe

The drink: Pomegranate vodka at Russian Vodka Room. 265 W 52nd St between Broadway and Eighth Ave (212-307-5835). $6
The outing: Having whetted your appetite with the Vodka Room’s live piano performances, get a night’s worth of tunes at nearby Iridium (1650 Broadway at 51st St, 212-582-2121).

The drink: Rye manhattan at DBA. 41 First Ave between 2nd and 3rd Sts (212-475-5097). $8.
The outing: Prep your taste buds (and stomach) at Moishe’s Kosher Bake Shop (115 Second Ave between 7th and 8th Sts, 212-505-8555), which carries a variety of rye breads ($1.70–$3).

The drink: Prohibition Punch (rum, Grand Marnier, passion-fruit juice and Moët & Chandon) at Campbell Apartment. Grand Central Terminal, 15 Vanderbilt Ave at 43rd St (212-953-0409). $15.The outing: Preface your foray into old Manhattan with a glimpse at where it’s been and where it’s going: “Jane Jacobs and the Future of New York” at the Municipal Art Society (457 Madison Ave at 51st St (212-935-3960).

The drink: Fitty-fitty (equal parts gin and vermouth with a splash of orange bitters) at Pegu Club. 77 W Houston St at West Broadway (212-473-7348). $12.
The outing: Tables at Pegu are equipped with lime and lemon juice, sugar and bitters, so you can adulterate to your heart’s content. Make it a night of DIY cocktails with a free class at the New York Bartending School (68 W 39th St between Fifth and Sixth Aves, second floor; 212-768-8460), Wednesdays at 6pm.

The drink: Bud on the Staten Island Ferry. (siferry.com, 718-876-8441). $3.
The outing: Once you’re on the Island, get a megagoblet of suds ($13 for a liter) and a soft pretzel ($1.50) at Killmeyer’s Old Bavaria Inn (4254 Arthur Kill Rd at Sharrotts Rd, Staten Island; 718-984-1202).

The drink: Hitachino Nest White Ale at Ginger Man. 11 E 36th St between Fifth and Madison Aves (212-532-3740). $8.
The outing: The bottles’ Japanese characters often awaken a hankering for ramen. Get a hearty helping ($6.75–$8.75) at Men Kui Tei (63 Cooper Sq at 7th St, 212-228-4152).
