    Get fit

    New ways to work out

Where to lift weights—and compete in a cage match, cheerlead or train like Randy Moss. Your localized guide to the freshest gyms and techniques, with programs low-key, intense, hard-core or your choice of all three.

MIDTOWN  |  THE VILLAGE  |  DOWNTOWN / WALL ST

    The Village

    Equinox

The holidays may be over, but you can still get in the spirit with the gym’s new Winter Wonderbody class, inspired by the recent Cirque du Soleil production, Wintuk. “It’s like interpretive dance,” says assistant manager Viet Vo. “There’s a focus on movement.” While you’re concentrating on your steps, you’ll be getting good core training—and a dose of Wintuk’s soundtrack. Cynics be warned.
Rates: $139–$170 per month; initiation fee $270–$645. 97 Greenwich Ave at 12th St (212-620-0103)

    Dolphin Fitness

The gym’s new superlow rates make it a good deal—and despite the prison-cell atmosphere, its recently expanded yoga class is just as good as those at its fancy-pants competitors. “Being in the East Village, you can bet that our program is really strong,” says club manager Dave Goldman. “This place is no-frills, but you get a smile on the way in and the way out.”
Rates: Six months $149 (includes two free training sessions). Through January 31. 94 E 4th St at Second Ave (212-387-9500)

    McBurney YMCA

The massive West Side Y is doing its best to keep up with the megaclubs with its new emPOWERment Project, which combines fitness and life-coaching in twice-weekly group workouts and counseling sessions. “Many of us don’t reach our fitness goals for reasons other than the exercise, whether it’s work related, relationship related or something else,” says Heather Chandor, health and fitness director. “This is a holistic approach to help people move forward in all aspects of their lives.”
Rates: Per month $86, seniors and students $68 per month. No initiation fee (usually $125) through February 4. EmPOWERment Project: $199 for members, $250 for nonmembers. 125 W 14th St between Sixth and Seventh Aves (212-741-9210)
