    Get rich

    Town haul

In New York, every building, burger joint and blade of grass is “the best,” “the oldest” or “the most famous.” But what is all this stuff actually worth? We asked the rest of the world on eBay.

Authentic New York Katz’s Deli memorabilia:
    Free; sold for 99¢

Our pitch: “It’s the site of Meg Ryan’s big fake orgasm in When Harry Met Sally… Here you get an irresistible trio of Katz’s Deli treats: authentic menu, place mat and entrance ticket!”
The buyer: Will in Oregon City, OR, collects restaurant memorabilia. “Katz’s is nationally famous as the classic New York deli!” he says.

Authentic New York autographed drumstick from the National:
    Free; sold for $5.50

Our pitch: “This drumstick was personally hand delivered to us by the band’s drummer (we have connections).”
The buyer: This stick went north of the border—to Lina in Timmins, Ontario—for a steal, even though we promoted the sale on a National fan site. Why so low? Most bidders thought it was a fake.

Authentic New York New Year’s Eve memorabilia:
    Free; sold for 99¢

Our pitch: “Plucked straight out of the fallen confetti just three days ago!”
The buyer: “I’m keeping this for many generations!” says Bill of Richmond.

Authentic New York official NYC condoms:
    Free; sold for 99¢

Our pitch: “For fans of sex and their city—here’s sex from ours!”
The buyer: Dalton: “I’m from a little town—Villisca, IA. My interest was piqued, for they are cheap condoms,” he says. “And yes, I do plan to use them.”

Authentic New York stationery from Hotel Chelsea:
    Free; sold for 99¢

Our pitch: “From the city where desperation is a room key—check in to this living piece of New York lore!”
The buyer: Kate from Philly could not resist the mystique of this single sheet of paper: “I love the Chelsea. I’ll probably put it on my wall.”

    Photograph: Beth Levendis

    Authentic New York McSorley’s mugs:
$10 each; sold for $36.50 (pair)

Our pitch: “Practice your pint-pulling and scowling as you sip from these official glasses!”
The buyer: New Jersey’s Ty McSorley—“No relation, dammit”—spent his 18th birthday there.

    Photograph: Beth Levendis

    Authentic New York restaurant matchbooks:
    Free; sold for $5.22

Our pitch: “Fifteen primo matchbooks gathered from New York’s most famous bars and restaurants. Establishments represented in this handsome collection include ‘21’ Club, Del Posto, Gramercy Tavern, Uncle Jack’s Steakhouse and the Silver Swan. A veritable gastronomic tour of Manhattan.”
The buyer: A Virginian. With the screen name “nyker8.”

    Photograph: Beth Levendis

Authentic New York i heart ny cap:
    $3; sold for $2.13

Our pitch: “A slogan originally conceived in 1977 to promote tourism, i heart ny cap is maybe the only clothing design both hipsters and normal people can agree on!”
The buyer: Snapped up for a bargain in Glendale, AZ. Dude will probably resell it there for $100.

    TOTAL EARNED:
    $15.12

(after eBay fees; buyers paid postage)

    TOTAL TIME SPENT:
    15 hours
