The most exciting recent addition to the NYC spa landscape, this extremely slick, high-tech Koreatown expanse feels more suited to Mars than its Herald Square surroundings. Treatments (which start at $70) include a turn in the grottoes: igloolike crystal-studded steam rooms that glow from within a pitch-black room in the center of the spa. In Korean-spa tradition, the place offers insanely thorough body scrubs. There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing eensy balls of exfoliated skin sloughed from your body. Cornelia Day Resort
The Romanian tradition of eating a teaspoon of honey begins many of the treatments at this massive, elegant oasis (where a 60-minute massage runs you $165). But the Eastern European ritual isn’t the only sweet thing about Cornelia: Its amenities rival those at any chichi getaway thanks to a rooftop garden, well-stocked locker rooms and one of the city’s only Watsu pools (the water is warmed to match your body’s temperature, and a therapist massages your floating limbs). What’s more, clients are encouraged to spend an entire day unwinding in the bevy of rooms—including the healthy in-house café and the Relaxation Library, which offers comfy couches and cashmere blankets. Based on the theory that water brings health, this Noho mainstay is outfitted with extremely popular subterranean pools, saunas and steam rooms (five hours of access costs $50). If you book a treatment that costs more than $100, access to the water cures is included. Splurge on the signature Red Flower–product–infused sessions, such as the Sento Treatment & Massage (90 minutes, $230). While you chill out in a suspended tub, the therapist applies various poultices and scrubs. The ingenious idea of prefacing a signature hot-towel massage (in which guests are draped with 16 steaming soft towels and skillfully kneaded through a veritable cotton cocoon) with a spell in a recliner, watching SportsCenter, makes true every man’s dream: being waited on while vegging out in front of Kenny Mayne. Open for about seven months now, this bi-level, 15,000-square-foot midtown space (which offers services for the fairer sex, too) includes a sealed steam area, a sauna, a spacious lounge and softly lit treatment rooms. Clean, modern and bedecked with ash-colored wood, this multistory oasis—tucked behind the Lather retail store—features all sorts of well-designed, high-tech touches. Manicure and pedicure stations are outfitted with flat-screen TVs (they can be stowed away if you’d rather zone out than watch E!) and pullout tables to stash your reading material. All services employ the house line of plant and food-derived products, and there’s a huge wall of plants to purify the air. While its high-rise location comes with an equally lofty price tag (a manicure will set you back $70–$75), all of the Asian-inflected services here are unparalleled in their luxuriousness. NEW Poh Tree Thai Spa
Named after the supposedly healing plants found in Bangkok’s Buddhist temples, this cozy spot took root in the LES last summer. Providing a much-needed beautycentric neighborhood haven, the narrow, 350-square-foot bi-level digs host a full array of services, including two pillow-laden pedicure stations and a pair of tranquil facial rooms sealed off by sliding doors. I opted for the cellulite-banishing black-pepper body wrap ($135), which blends Eastern and Western techniques such as Thai and lymphatic massage. The younger, slightly more upscale sister to Union Square’s bustling Acqua Beauty Bar specializes in hard-to-accommodate groups (there are loads of manicure stations for bachelorette parties, private rooms with Wi-Fi for corporate retreats, and a section specifically for men). NEW Wellness Men’s Day Spa
Like a Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurant, Wellness offers high-end European products with a graceful Asian twist. Tucked into a cozy two floors in the Flatiron district, the spa is a gentle paradise of taupe and stone, accented with tasteful flowers and geared toward providing a relaxing environment for the tired modern businessman. Manicure and pedicure stations lie just beyond the tea-and-juice bar in the vestibule; down the hall and downstairs, individual rooms for massage, waxing and toning await. The facial regimen (starts at $135)—administered in a small room whose combination of high-tech gear and hypnotic music make it seem like the world’s most soothing dentist’s office—is especially rigorous and rewarding. Drawing on French and Italian techniques and products, the patient and informative facialist Rafael deploys a dizzying arsenal of tactics to buff and rejuvenate the skin, including masks, mists, micropeels, microdermabrasion, multiple lotions and even a few painless needles. NEW Iguazu Day Spa
Though it’s helmed by Fabien Azoulay, a former manager at men-only spa Nickel, this small, pristine duplex caters to both sexes and offers everything from partyworthy blowouts and manicures to pore-suctioning backcials. I submitted to the signature Pachamama Massage (75 minutes, $168), in which the extremely affable Hector paired hot stones, bamboo sticks and a host of yummy-smelling oils with a blend of massage techniques (shiatsu, deep-tissue and Swedish, plus a round of Thai stretching) for a rubdown so soothing that it actually put me to sleep. 350 Hudson St between Charlton and King Sts (212-647-0007, iguazudayspa.com) —EL
