I have $7.00 in my pocket and I like reading, exploring the city, Broadway shows and diner food.
TONY RECOMMENDS
Tour She may be strapped, but that doesn’t mean she’s short on choices. Sarah, who likes to explore NYC, can join the Downtown Alliance for a free weekly walking tour of the Wall Street area on either Thursday or Saturday: Meet at noon at the front steps of the U.S. Custom House (1 Bowling Green between Broadway and State St; 212-606-4064, downtownny.com).
Lunch Afterward, she can warm up with a spicy lunch special from the steam table at Bennie’s Thai Café (88 Fulton St at Gold St, 212 587-8930. Lunch specials served Mon–Fri noon–3pm, from $5.25).
Shopping Since Sarah told us she reads a lot, she can drop her last Washington on a treasure from the dollar racks at The Strand Book Annex (95 Fulton St between Gold and William Sts, 212-732-6070).
Lecture The book will keep her occupied while she’s waiting for the crowd to settle down at Downtown Alliance’s free monthly lecture series, “Third Thursdays” (Museum of American Finance, 48 Wall St at William St; 212-908-4110, downtownny.com. 7pm. Online reservations required), which covers issues relating to the neighborhood. On Thursday 21, Municipal Art Society president Kent Barwick discusses the city’s waterfront.
Movie If a classic movie sounds more appealing, Sarah can ditch the lecture and head to the Winter Garden at the World Financial Center (220 Vesey St at West St; 212-417-7000, worldfinancialcenter.com. 7pm, free), a glass-enclosed mecca for free art shows and performances. Thursday 21’s event is a screening of the 1925 Russian saga Battleship Potemkin, accompanied by original music composed and performed by David Krakauer and Socalled.
TOTAL SPENT: $6.25
