    Time Out New York / Issue 647 : Feb 20–26, 2008
    Recession special!

    Pocket watch

We asked a bunch of hardworking New Yorkers to fork over their cash, then custom made itineraries based on their interests. You don’t have to be loaded to afford French food, champagne cocktails and fine art.

Carol Celantano, (with her dog, Gina) fifties, art dealer, Upper East Side

    Photograph: Jeff Gurwin

I have $63.33 in my pocket and I like shopping, the opera and symphony, art and good restaurants.

    TONY RECOMMENDS

Symphony An orchestra addict, Carol will hit the jackpot on Sunday 24, at Carnegie Hall’s Discovery Day: Olivier Messiaen (154 W 57th St at Seventh Ave, 212-247-7800. $9). The event is jam-packed with love for the French composer on his centennial: a lecture at 1pm, a film at 2pm, an interview with protégé Pierre Boulez at 3:30pm and a performance of Messiaen’s Visions de l’Amen for two pianos at 4:30pm. And all this for only $9!

    Museum of Arts & Design

Museum If Carol wanted to slip away from the music for a bit and indulge her love for the visual arts, she could duck into the nearby Museum of Arts & Design (40 W 53rd St between Fifth and Sixth Aves, 212-956-3535. $9, Thu 6–8pm pay what you wish). Often overshadowed by its scene-stealing neighbor, MoMA, MAD is an inspiring nugget of an art space that focuses on underappreciated art forms, as with its current shows on embroidery and goblet design. Seriously, they’re very cool, as is the small but beautifully curated museum shop, which is an exhibit in itself.

Museum Unfortunately, several of the other great galleries in this area are closed on Sundays, but they’re worth coming back for, particularly the current exhibition of works by English potter Josiah Wedgwood at the UBS Art Gallery (1285 Sixth Ave between 51st and 52nd Sts, 212-713-2885. Free).

Dinner Since Carol’s day so far only costs a mere $18, she can afford to shell out for dinner. She expressed an amour for French food, so we suggest Seppi’s in Le Parker Meridien (123 W 56th St between Sixth and Seventh Aves, 212-708-7444), where the three-course prix fixe is $28 from 4 to 7pm—throw in a glass of white, add the tax and tip, and she’s out the door for $45. Or, if she’s feeling decadent, she can start her day with Seppi’s chocolate brunch, where all the entrées have some sweet spin—like steak and eggs with cocoa beans or phyllo-wrapped poached eggs topped with chocolate shavings—and there’s a chocolate dessert buffet to boot.

    TOTAL SPENT: $63
