I have $46.60 in my pocket and I like free museums, movies, bookstores, Latin jazz and Thai food.
TONY RECOMMENDS
Dancing We don’t know where she’ll get the energy, but after school on Friday, our teacher and her gal pals can hit the Salsa Groove party at S.O.B.’s (204 Varick St at Houston St, 212-243-4940). Before 7pm, admission is free for women and $10 for guys. She can loosen up with cheap frozen mojitos (5–7pm; two-for-one $11), then snag a free dance lesson to hone her moves for the live salsa band that follows—on Friday 22, Sammy Ayala, Yomo Toro and Zon del Barrio play, from 8pm.
Dinner We know Simone likes Thai food, but we’d love her to try the primo Asian grub (yes, they have pad thai) at Noodle Bar (26 Carmine St between Bedford and Bleecker Sts, 212-524-6800). She can sit at the bar and watch the cooks work dishes such as panfried dumplings with pork-and-chive filling ($5) and the superspicy coconut shrimp and spicy rice noodle ($11)—with tax and tip that’s a nutritious $21.
Shopping A few doors away, Simone can satisfy her lit-browsing urges at Unoppressive Non-Imperialist Bargain Books (34 Carmine St between Bedford and Bleecker Sts, 212-229-0079). They’re open until midnight and have everything from film encyclopedias to desk diaries; Simone could nab a copy of Miles Davis: The Definitive Biography for $6.75 (including tax).
Museum Simone’s last stop is the Rubin Museum of Art (150 W 17th St between Sixth and Seventh Aves, 212-620-5000). The K2 Lounge is a Friday evening social mixer featuring DJs, drink specials and tours of the museum’s Himalayan art, plus music and film events. On Friday 22 there is a screening of Slaughterhouse-Five, with an introduction by philosopher J. David Velleman (9:30pm; $7 minimum at bar).
TOTAL SPENT: $45.75
