PSYCHIC: WILLIAM
An intense man with glowworm-green eyes originally from the Dominican Republic, William is in his early thirties and wears a purple dashiki. He is speaking quietly with a woman who came in for love soap. “No,” he tells her. “I have what you need.” She leaves with something called leche del hombre amado (milk of the loved man).
Location: Centro Botanico y Esoterico Gran Bua, 1582 St. Nicholas Ave between 189th and 190th Sts (212-740-0449)
Cost: $30 for 20 minutes of very intense tarot action
Ambience: The narrow passage between shelves of orisha candles bearing trabajos (spells such as “Do as I say!“) and cabinets of talismans, dragon's blood, “stay away from me” oil and religious statues is further cramped by folding chairs. I ascend a skinny, winding staircase to a closet-size space in a storage room, filled with candles, statues and two chairs, and sectioned off by a red-velvet curtain.
His reading: I would have been freaked out by William’s intense reading if my friend had not been there to translate. I have greatness inside me, he says. An exceptional, larger-than-life aura. I could do what he does, he says. But everyone is jealous of my power. Many people are performing voodoo spells on me as we speak (creepy!). Luckily, none of the voodoo has been strong enough…yet. I will need extra luck to fend off these haters.
The spin: William suggests a foot-high pink candle ($10) and a luck bath called “La Magia del Dólar” ($8). I am to burn this candle night and day for one week and return for another consultation.
How he got into the biz: “I was born with this gift,” he says, eyes widening, his face wearing something between a snarl and a smirk. He emerged from his mother, it seems, in a dashiki-style onesie with a working knowledge of tarot.
Heard about the half-mil swindle? William has nothing to say about the psychic con, but as he makes his way down the stairs to the shop to sell me some para(normal)phernalia, he calls out to the woman behind the counter: “La gringa, se quedo encantada.” (“The white girl loved it.“)

When I read this article, my first thought was how could someone like this take a true gift which not many possess, dedicate their lives to people like me in need of some true approach to healing myself. Kathleen Karter, allowed me to understand what was happenening to my body, mind , and spirit. I never told her about my stomach. Her ability to see me,and what I should seek as an alternate way to improve my health, is worth more than all the money I have spent in search
the right medication!!

I write to strongly object to this article. In my experiece with Ms.Karter, she has been a consummate professional, and completely accurate in her readings. I found your article to be most inaccurate and offensive.

I failed to say that she has also been accurate!

I find this article very prejudicial, biased, and inaccurate. In my experience, I found Ms. Karter's predictions to be right on point.

All of these so-called psychics sound like phonies and quacks. You too can learn fortune telling - come on! It's like no one even tried to find any one who had a legitimate session.
I went to a small place in Yonkers called Katie's Cottage to have my tea leaves read by an Irish woman. Katie's is just a regular Irish bar and on certain Sundays they used to offer this. When I went there were probably 20 of us. We were served tea to drink then waited our turn. She told me that I was buying property so I should be careful because there was a problem with the paperwork. I was buying a house at the time and indeed, the value of the house was less than the sale price so the bank rejected the loan. Next she said she saw that someone in my family suffered from circulatory problems and would not be around long. My mom died within two months of seeing her. I had just been through a horrendous break up which she sensed as well. She didn't get anything wrong and the things right were enough to freak me out for life. I don't want to go back because sometimes there are things we are better off not knowing. I will never rest easy about her knowing my mom would die. She had a gift no doubt about it. Most people who advertise and make a living at this seem to be the phoniest. From her face, I would say that this has been as much burden as gift to her.

I parked in front of a psychic's shop/ place of business in Hell's Kitchen a few years ago, and ran inside a building right there for 2 minutes... 2 minutes tops... The so-called psychic was sitting on her stoop with her grand daughter. I got back to my car and someone had popped the lock and forced their way in, to steal my laptop and a bag of dirty laundry. I asked the psychic which they went, because she was sitting on her stoop the whole time. She smiled and said 'She didn't see nuthin." Worst Psychic EVER!
