    Psychics

    Seers catalog

NYC psychic Tammy Mitchell was recently accused of grand larceny and “fortune-telling” because she charged a stockbroker $487,000 to fix his bad juju. With mystics on almost every street corner, we wondered how far they have to go to make a buck in this town. Slip beyond the beaded curtain to find out.

    PSYCHIC: KATHLEEN KARTER
Karter seems like your average cookie-baking late-middle-aged woman, until she sings along with the spirit world and then barks out, “Am I clear, dear?!?‚” in an Exorcist voice. She came to the city from Omaha with a singing scholarship to Juilliard and found a second career as a medium.

Location: Private residence, 66 W 94th St between Central Park West and Columbus Ave (212-663-7434)

Cost: $200 for an hour-long session; numerology analysis included

Ambience: Karter's apartment is on the top floor of a UWS co-op. The place is spotless, save for a very tall stack of books on which I am ordered to place my purse (my every move is micromanaged during the session), and is decorated with African-American art and pink Victorian furniture. Two folding chairs face each other at opposite ends of the room, with the blinds meticulously half-drawn on a wall of windows, leaving Karter in shadow and giving the warm setting an ominous edge.

Her reading: After “going into” my circulatory system, Karter recommends that I eat more beets. She asks what sport I play; the spirit had shown her a ball above my head. “I used to play volleyball,” I reply, and she seems pleased that her “vision” is confirmed. (Note: I’m six feet tall.) Many of her character assessments are spot-on—I worry too much, I’m a klutz who doesn’t get enough sleep, etc.—but her more specific predictions sound dubious. For example, she says I’m involved with a man whose hair is darker than mine. (Um…I’m blond.)

The spin: She suggests I buy supplements, get a massage and have my birth chart read by her friend. I suspect this friend returns the favor.

How she got into the biz: When she was seven years old, Karter says, she had a vision of her grandfather, a mason and minister, lying on the ground. Soon after, he fell from scaffolding while constructing his own church and died. She knew then, she says, that she had the gift. She began studying as a young person and became a full-time medium after a consultation with astrologer to the stars Hans Holzer.

Heard about the half-mil swindle? “She was a phony. I try not to commercialize what I do. Most people with real gifts don’t even come out into the open.”

    Accuracy:

When I read this article, my first thought was how could someone like this take a true gift which not many possess, dedicate their lives to people like me in need of some true approach to healing myself. Kathleen Karter, allowed me to understand what was happenening to my body, mind , and spirit. I never told her about my stomach. Her ability to see me,and what I should seek as an alternate way to improve my health, is worth more than all the money I have spent in search the right medication!!

I write to strongly object to this article. In my experiece with Ms.Karter, she has been a consummate professional, and completely accurate in her readings. I found your article to be most inaccurate and offensive.

I failed to say that she has also been accurate!

I find this article very prejudicial, biased, and inaccurate. In my experience, I found Ms. Karter's predictions to be right on point.

All of these so-called psychics sound like phonies and quacks. You too can learn fortune telling - come on! It's like no one even tried to find any one who had a legitimate session. I went to a small place in Yonkers called Katie's Cottage to have my tea leaves read by an Irish woman. Katie's is just a regular Irish bar and on certain Sundays they used to offer this. When I went there were probably 20 of us. We were served tea to drink then waited our turn. She told me that I was buying property so I should be careful because there was a problem with the paperwork. I was buying a house at the time and indeed, the value of the house was less than the sale price so the bank rejected the loan. Next she said she saw that someone in my family suffered from circulatory problems and would not be around long. My mom died within two months of seeing her. I had just been through a horrendous break up which she sensed as well. She didn't get anything wrong and the things right were enough to freak me out for life. I don't want to go back because sometimes there are things we are better off not knowing. I will never rest easy about her knowing my mom would die. She had a gift no doubt about it. Most people who advertise and make a living at this seem to be the phoniest. From her face, I would say that this has been as much burden as gift to her.

I parked in front of a psychic's shop/ place of business in Hell's Kitchen a few years ago, and ran inside a building right there for 2 minutes... 2 minutes tops... The so-called psychic was sitting on her stoop with her grand daughter. I got back to my car and someone had popped the lock and forced their way in, to steal my laptop and a bag of dirty laundry. I asked the psychic which they went, because she was sitting on her stoop the whole time. She smiled and said 'She didn't see nuthin." Worst Psychic EVER!
