    Urban outfits

You think you don’t care about trends? These ridiculously stylish New Yorkers sport their own looks—runways be damned.

    By Photographs by Nick Ruechel

    Mordechai Rubinstein
    Crown Heights, Brooklyn

Mordechai says: “This is the same kind of hat Frank Sinatra wore on the cover of Come Fly with Me. I got it at a flea market in Florida. If I’m wearing a suit or sport coat I’ll don a fedora; when I think I won’t run into anyone, I’ll wear a fitted hat. I have been wearing a black Borsalino since my bar mitzvah and haven’t looked back. They get better with every wind- and rainstorm!”

“When the trousers have buttons, one must wear suspenders. I love a high waist with braces! Your stomach fluctuates throughout the day, so suspenders beat a belt anytime.”

“This suit is vintage J.Press. I don’t have a favorite outfit. I just love classic American Ivy League style. When it comes to all the patterns, there’s no method to my madness. It’s intuitive, not overthought.”

“I grew up wearing a suit every Shabbes. I look to the Duke of Windsor and David Hockney for inspiration—the two together make the perfect combination of English gentleman and U.S. dirtbag.”

Interviews by Nina Christensen, Lauren Shopp and Allison Steinberg

It's nice to see people having their own direction when it comes to style, but I cringe to hear people fawning over designer brand names like it's the only thing that matters. I wonder if that baby knows it's shoes cost more than my whole outfit?
