Anyway, the cop takes me back to the Tombs. And I’m in a cell with this totally eclectic mix of people: two NYU kids who got caught selling Ecstasy; some guys that were brought in for hawking bootleg DVDs; a superfancy, rich man; a crazy Native American guy who got arrested for driving the wrong way through the Lincoln Tunnel; and some scary-looking dudes who were taken in for selling crack. Some people were really freaking out because they know they’re going to jail. But other people are just thinking, Fuck, I’m missing The Simpsons, or whatever. It was this bizarre microcosm of New York in the cell.
