    Culture report

    Part 1: The gatekeepers

    New York culture report
Illustration: Allen Crawford of Plankton Art Co.

Who planned your week? We know, you thought it was you. In some ways it was—you did, after all, decide to head to Film Forum on Friday, see that MoMA show on Saturday and buy tickets to Dance Theater Workshop for Sunday. But who are the men and women behind the curtains at these New York institutions, and how do they determine what to program? More importantly, are they any good at it? TONY’s editors identified some of the most powerful gatekeepers of NYC culture and grilled them about their choices. And we’ve included excerpts from their personal calendars so you can see what’s been informing their decisions. In the end, you’ll get a better sense of who’s running the show, just in time for Part 2 of our series (coming this summer): the artists. It all starts on the next page—and throughout the whole mag.

FILM: Go flick yourself: You either think Richard Peña’s got taste or you don’t. Frankly, the director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center couldn’t care less.
FILM: Past due: Does dealing with vintage films ever get…old?
FILM: Curator's calendar: IFC Films VP of theatrical and home-entertainment marketing Ryan Werner
THEATER: Causing a scene: Can anyone save us from the aging subscribers and rank commercialism that has paralyzed our city’s stages? Our Theater editor comes to the rescue.
THEATER: Q&A: André Bishop and Paige Evans
THEATER: Curator's calendar: St. Ann’s warehouse artistic director Susan Feldman
ART: Q&A with Glenn Lowry, MoMA Director: Crazy about our city’s most renowned modern-art museum? Here’s the guy to thank. (You can also thank him for that $20 admission fee.)
ART: How a show is made: The splashy events and exhibits you lap up as greedy consumers take months—often years—to pull together. We trace one current art show from birth to afterlife.
ART: No man’s De Land: The art world tries to carry on a legacy.
ART: Curators' calendar: Whitney Biennial cocurators Henriette Huldisch and Shamim M. Momin
MUSIC: One-man bands: The most vital music nights in town aren’t programmed by Bowery Presents—but by the musicians themselves. Mark your calendars for seven days’ worth of smart series.
CLASSICAL MUSIC: Backstage drivers: Meet four of classical music’s behind-the-scenes maestros. They’re in it for the future of programming—and all those free performances.
CLASSICAL MUSIC: Curator's calendar: Metropolitan Opera General Manager Peter Gelb
DANCE: How she move: Dance Theater Workshop’s Carla Peterson says no to open flames but yes to some equally hot programming.
DANCE: Danspace discussion: We talk to Judy Hussie-Taylor, 45, executive director of Danspace Project.
If I were curator for a day…: Our editors explain what the cultural world would be like if they held the reins of power.
