Best new restaurant
Allen & Delancey
Other nominees: Bar Boulud, Centro Vinoteca, Park Avenue Spring
Self-help books tell us that when one door closes, another opens. That was the story for chef Neil Ferguson, who, after being canned by chef Gordon Ramsay (Ferguson came to New York to head Gordon Ramsay at the London Hotel), signed on to helm the kitchen at Allen & Delancey. A rare combination—downtown hip with an uptown fine-dining pedigree—is what made you select this charming hideaway as the year’s best new restaurant. The quasigothic interior, with brick walls, dripping candles and a tableau of artfully lit bottles behind the bar, is an Edward Gorey–esque escape that’s reason enough to visit. But what really gives this place chops is the food: Rustic offerings, such as the cabbage, beef and onion, resemble still lifes on a plate.

definately a place that many locals go. outside seating can be nice if you can get one. tab is always reasonable. everything else like service and food is EH. i have left with my party before ordering because the host/waiter was just plain rude and obnoxious. frankly, they need to get over themselves... but i guess as long as ppl keep coming.

Apparently the readers of this magazine have no BBQ experience whatsoever if they think hill country is the best! I know there is a shortage of good BBQ in NYC, but even Dallas BBQ is better than this overpriced garbage chain! Daisy Mae's, RUB, hell, the mcRib is better than hill country! If you like paying 10 bucks for a mexican coke that tastes like every other coke in the world, and carrying a bunch of subpar smoked meats all over a buffet restaurant then by all means, enjoy!
