Agnes of God (1985)

THEN
My obsession with Agnes of God was one of the first of many perverse attractions. Although I couldn’t admit it to my 17-year-old proto-lesbo self, I had the total hots for Meg Tilly, playing a novice nun accused of murdering her infant. I fibbed to my parents repeatedly, saying I was going to the library when I was sneaking off to watch Agnes. Again. Alone. The deceit surely added to the erotic charge.
NOW
Now I’ve kicked Tilly to the curb for Jane Fonda as Martha, the psychiatrist investigating Agnes’s case, who looks great in blazers and sweater-vests. And I picked up on the love story between Martha and Agnes. Anne Bancroft’s Mother Superior says to Martha: “You’re thinking about her all the time. I’m not accusing—I’m recognizing.” Maybe it’s that recognition that turned me on in the first place.
