Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)

THEN
I still remember VHS copies of this teen comedy that got extremely wobbly around the 52-minute mark, when that fabulously proportioned creature, Phoebe Cates, rises up out of the pool. She smiles (just at me). Water glistens on her body. A power chord shimmers and that red bikini top is history. Yes, the dream sequence ends with Judge Reinhold jerking off in the bathroom. I bet he wishes he had a remote.
NOW
These days, I see so much in Fast Times that I admire in a dorky professional way: the absurdly talented cast (Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, etc.), screenwriter Cameron Crowe’s taste for new-wave pop, the daring abortion subplot, the brilliance of Jeff Spicoli’s stoner persona. But yes, Phoebe still works. Phenomenally. I went on to seek her out in Private School and Gremlins, but this is her puberty-inducing high point.
