How Sex ruined New York City

The TONY list of what you can officially blame on SATC

    By Claire Madigan

    4. Cougars
We're not saying Samantha Jones should've gotten married, but we bet a lot of recently divorced trophy wives have a Sex and the City DVD, and so do the investment bankers and Ivy League students they hit on. There will always be older women who head out to Columbus Circle in figure-skater outfits to get laid, but SATC made "cougar bars" a commercial success and turned MILFs into a checklist item for boast-seeking 20-year-olds. Mrs. Robinson has become Stifler's mom. And in order to stay in touch with your sexuality, you apparently need to carry a "rabbit" in your purse and blow the UPS guy.

Sex and the city is very very stupid serie. Nymphomania, frustrations and boring life - thats not NY.

I don't think NY is ruined. It's evolving and shifting, but it's definitely not ruined. This is still a city where you can see amazing new artwork, hear great music, attend a fascinating lecture or just sit and watch the crazy passing parade EVERY SINGLE DAY of the week at any price range. And if you're focusing on what others have and how others live, I feel sorry for you, because you're not living. hat you don't, you're not living.

Its not that SATC ruined NY...blame developers, pretentious people, mags like this wit a quiz 2 c if ur a New Yorka. NYC is being sold as a product, people try 2 hard to be kool n way superficial. NYC blood and soul is being sucked by the commercial vampires!!..U try too hard to be edgy...but U R not artsy...not new...remember subways with graffiti, punk rockas in the LES!! Burned buildings that u live in now $1MM condos....Gee thanks MOM and DAD!!

Sex and the City is evil, pure and simple.

To SassyJones: Give me a f**king break. Women have done this from the beginning of time. There is nothing special about the current generation. It is an insult to women to state that some fictional TV "empowered" women to do what they have done for generations. It's TV. Get a life.

I think the city was already in a process of ruin when SATC came along. "Sex" was just taking what was already happening and exaggerating it, like a true soap opera. It's only fault was that it became a successful show that inspired imitations like that Carmel ad. If you want to blame anyone for the city's ruin, blame the insatiable developers. On another note, what the hell is up with Samantha's overphotoshopped left eye in the pic above? creepy.

It didn't ruin the city, if anything it empowered the women who live in it, and around it. It showed women that it was okay to have sex, get dumped, do the dumping, have an opinion, wear flashy clothes, be the head of a company, date a much younger or older man, get hurt, get heartbroken, love, be loved, be envied, have best friends, all while having a drink after work or meeting up at a diner for some gal-talk.

The SATC tourists didn't ruin the meat packing district. The 22 yo bankers who live in and out of the city did. The meatpacking district was a little seedy 20 years ago, and even if you were enjoying the clit club, that place could have used a little freshening up. Now of course, it is a nightmare and no one over 30 in their right mind would hang out there, unless at the Monkey Bar.

LAME attempt at blaming stuff on the girls. Cougar bars explosion is a threat? Either you think you're so young and hot and you find sexual older women tragic or you're one of those prude women. Move on with the time will ya. Women these days have sex whenever they fancy. With who they fancy. Girl's blogging brings you down? Why do u even read them. Oh my god, this attempt is beyond lame it sounds like a sour grape complaining. Really.

This whole article is absolutely BRILLIANT. Love it. Could not possibly be more accurate. There is endless material in this entire argument.

Thank you!, I'm sick of pretending that I enjoy all these douches from outside of NY being here. They're arrogant, rude and indignant when native NYers complain about their presence. NY is not a TV show - it's made up of real people who have been here for ages and have contributed to the character of the city. A character which has now been lost thanks to all the shit bags that have rapidly taken over.

I mean sometimes tourists are annoying when they come into the city looking all sloppy and going on a SATC tour is MAD LAME! Find the locations yourself! It isn't that hard. If you really wanna feel like a part of the SATC girls you need to try and look th epart and not act like crazed little girls fawning over american iodol contestants. =)

What is so scary about people from the suburbs enjoying a city that MANY other people enjoy? Perhaps, that certain breed of New Yorkers who obsess over how they are unique (just like everyone else) can no longer feel superior? Pathetic.

dont be jealous that everybody gives a shit about carrie bradshaw and SATC, and no ones heard of 'time out new york' or Calir Madigan. the only reason i know about this is because there is because of this article--and i live in ny!

is that all you can blame on SATC??! Its clear to me that you want to hate the show but you just dont know how!! SATC has given a nice publicity to NYC and lots of people (like me) that live in other countries had another "big" reason to return to New York again!
