    Time Out New York / Issue 665 : Jun 25–Jul 3, 2008

    Subway tour of New York

The subway in the summertime—not a great place to spend a carefree afternoon. But when you emerge from underground, green parks, quirky shops and amazing ethnic eats await—if you know where to look. We asked locals to lead us to their favorite hidden treasures. Here are the first 17 of an eventual 491-part series! (No, for real, we’re doing this for a different stop every week.)

    Bronx

B D to Bedford Park: Blvd Head uptown—waay uptown—for cooked goat, an ancient church and lots of grass.
1 to 225th St–Marble Hill: You’ll find quality jazz and unique hangover cures in the eight-block radius of this tiny enclave.
6 to Hunts Point Ave: The city’s food-distribution hub has more than just indigestion to offer.
1 to 238th St: Spend any time around this stop, and you'll forget you're not in Galway.
2 5 to Freeman St: Score a cheap "I [heart] BX" shirt and some earnest Puerto Rican fare.

    Brooklyn

CS to Franklin Ave: Go for the hip accessories, leave with a belly full of orange juice and beer.
N to Bay Pkwy: See Bensonhurst old and new
L to Canarsie–Rockaway Pkwy: Need space? Go fly a kite in far, far Brooklyn (then pig out on pizza).
G to Clinton–Washington Aves: Try the Snow Mosquito!
R to Bay Ridge Ave: History, baby carriages and boutiques take over Disco Town.

    Manhattan

6 to 28th St: Slurp down authentic noodles and accessorize yourself.
ACE to 34th St–Penn Station: The commuters and barflys 'round here know where to get a meal with no MSG.

    Queens

A to Ozone Park–Lefferts Blvd: Feast your eyes (and trim your eyebrows) in Little Guyana.
EV to 23rd St–Ely Ave: Get a load of Long Island City’s art, coffee and afternoon tea.
7 to 61st St–Woodside: People-watch for days in this multiculti Queens neighborhood.

    Staten Island

SIR to Grant City: Unlikely fruit, kick-ass slices and sandy beaches abound in sunny Shaolin.
Staten Island ferry to St George: Hippies, cookies and used clothing.
