TANGO
Tango Porteño
South Street Seaport, Pier 16, John St at South St (newyorktango.com)
THE CROWD
Mixed and large. Nearly 40 people joined the outdoor lesson (Sundays at 8:30pm), and half were attractive young women. The men: handsome guys in their twenties and thirties to the slightly creepy elderly.
HOW AVAILABLE
Event organizers claim that it’s 80 percent single, and Alex Koo, 28, and his GF were testing the event for their solo friends. One veteran dancer joked, “Tango is intimacy for three minutes without commitment.”
HOW HANDSY
Very. That head-to-head, chest-to-chest posture you see in the movies is part of the real thing. So if your partner is willing, you can get nice and close.
HOOK-UP POTENTIAL
Good, but only for beginners. We’re told tango fans get very serious very fast—about dancing. And they judge mates by their ability on the floor. So if your honey is hooked on tango, you’ve got competition.
