Pick: "Get Around to It" by Tracey Thorn
This was on Out of the Woods, Tracey Thorn's studio album from last year. While I loved it when it was new, the song recently crept back into my consciousness on its own, as the best songs will. It's Arthur Russell's tune originally, and the transfer of voices across genders and orientations gives the lyrics an added layer of sly. But the first thing that hits you is that shimmying beat—simple, harder to stand still to than to dance, kind of like an update on Talking Heads circa 1977 — that Thorn works on, over and around, like the pro she is.
