    Fringe Festival 2008

Time Out New York’s Fringe Binge

    Krapp, 39
    Krapp, 39

    Edited by Adam Feldman

The Fringe Festival officially ended on August 24th. But like fiends in a B-grade horror flick, some of these Fringe shows just won't die. A dozen of them, in fact, have extended their runs as part of the FringeNYC Encore Series at the Barrow Street Theatre and the SoHo Playhouse. The lists includes some of the TONY team's favorite Fringe offerings this year; if you missed your chance to see them the first time, you have no excuse to miss them now.

    • Blanche Survives Katrina in a FEMA Trailer Named Desire
    • Boy in The Basement
    • The Complete Performer
    • The Fabulous Kane Sisters in Box Office Poison
    • johnpaulgeorgeringo
    • Krapp, 39
    • Monsters in the Wood
    • Perez Hilton Saves the Universe (or at least the greater Los Angeles Area)
    • The Redheaded Man
    • See How Beautiful I Am: The Return of Jackie Susann
    • That Dorothy Parker
    • There Will Come Soft Rains

Each August, the New York International Fringe Festival unfurls its massive self, and we throw our arms up in dismay. Who could cover so many shows? Which are the good ones? How could we decide which shows to see and which to review?

Dealing with the Fringe, in other words, is a problem. But this year we have a new solution: We're seeing and reviewing everything.

That's right: everything. There are 201 shows in this year's festival, and we are reviewing every single one of them, from The Alice Complex to Zombie. We're reviewing everything even if it kills us, which it might, or just hurts us very badly, which it surely, surely will.

Reviewing 201 shows in two weeks is no easy task. So, in the democratic spirit of the Fringe itself, TONY’s Theater department has gone wide: Thanks to a frenzy of in-house conscription, more than 150 different TONY staffers—writers, editors, designers, photographers, marketers, even interns—have now chosen at least one show apiece, at random, from a thick stack of Fringe postcards and press releases. Over the next few weeks, our ragtag army will fan out below 14th Street to sample this year’s festival fare and report on their findings. Some of our guinea-pig scriveners are seasoned reviewers; others will be taking their first shot at drama criticism. The breadth of this range strikes us as true to the nature of the Fringe Festival itself: an unpredictable mix of well-seasoned expertise and uncooked enthusiasm.

    Wish us strength.

Check back regularly to see new reviews as we post them. And for full details on the festival, visit fringenyc.org. TONY is also at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Read our coverage here.

Interesting that two of your 5-star shows did not make the Encore series.
