    Time Out New York / Issue 594 : Feb 15–21, 2007
    Review

    Norbit

Dir. Brian Robbins. 2007. PG-13. 102mins. Eddie Murphy, Thandie Newton, Eddie Griffin.

BURN, BABY, BURN Murphy dons fat suit, sheds dignity.

When Martin Lawrence and Tyler Perry play gals with sky-high BMI, at least their characters offer—and are shown—a certain amount of love and respect. Eddie Murphy, on the other hand, brings nothing but hate to Rasputia, a morbidly obese monstrosity married to the titular nerd (Murphy again). Thandie Newton, as Norbit’s childhood sweetheart, looks mortified every second. And why wouldn’t she be—this is what she has to choose from post-Crash? Those women who are proud of their big asses need not internalize Norbit’s fatphobia: Now they have Tyra as their spokesperson. (Now playing; Click here for venues.) — Melissa Anderson
