    Time Out New York / Issue 568 : Aug 17–23, 2006
    Review

    Step Up

Dir. Anne Fletcher. 2006. PG-13. 98mins. Channing Tatum, Jenna Dewan, Rachel Griffiths.

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE? Dewan is pretty in pink.

Disney-flick chaste and fresh as an episode of Fame, Step Up takes innocuous movie uplift to a new level. True, the happy-footed, mushmouthed protagonist, Tyler (Tatum), is a Baltimore ghetto kid who swipes cars, but the instant he’s sentenced to community service in an arts academy, you know things will turn around. Do they ever: He lands an upper-crust hottie (Dewan) and a spot in her senior-dance showcase, as well as an apparent free ride at the school. Someone has to pay, naturally, and a comic-relief would-be larcenist is on hand for fourth-act carnage. Those unmoved by sloppy, Janet Jackson–style hoofing routines might envy his fate.
