The abiding themes of fredflare.com, the nine-year-old kitsch-filled website that’s on the bookmark bar of every tween (and um, on ours, too) in the country are humor, nostalgia and accessibility. Thus, a coin purse that looks like a Hostess Cupcake ($14), Band-Aids shaped after strips of bacon ($7), i heart nkotb earrings ($10), bow barrettes ($8) and Britney Spears wigs ($22) are mainstays. “We carry stuff that reminds us of the past,” Keith Carollo explains. “And stuff that we could afford when we were kids,” his partner, Chris Bick, adds. “We live by the 5 C’s: cute, clean, cheap, colorful and childhood.”
So it’s no surprise that their cozy Chelsea one-bedroom, which they moved into ten years ago after relocating from Chicago (there, Bick worked for Urban Outfitters, while Carollo passed his days at an advertising agency) is accented with high-wattage walls, collectible Blythe dolls from Japan, and canned rainbow sprinkles and fake cakes made by their friend Amy Sedaris. “We pretty much just display art made by our friends—plus, there’s a shot of a carnival back in Chicago in our bedroom. Our first date was on the Ferris wheel there and I totes threw up,” Carollo laughs. “At the end of the days, it’s our little world—we close the blinds, turn on the ice-cream and lava lamps, and hang out with all our TV pals.”
