    Time Out New York / Issue 633 : Nov 15–21, 2007

    3 questions for…David Wright

    Third baseman, hustler

    Photo: Cory Schwartz

1 Is your nickname really Visine?
Yeah, I don’t know where that came from. We have a little joke inside the clubhouse: When people false-hustle or go through the motions, we call that “eyewash”—and Visine is a type of eyewash. For some reason, that got started.

2 Cut the shit dude: What happened this season?
It’s very easy to point fingers, but when you look back on it, and I’ve said this all along, it was the 25 players in the clubhouse. You have to play your best baseball down that homestretch—and that’s when we played our worst baseball. We didn’t deserve it. We led 99 percent of the year, we were in first place, but when it comes down to it, you have to finish strong and peak at the right time. There needs to be some personnel changes, but I think we have a good core group of guys. Hopefully that stays intact and we just complement that with some free-agent signings or trades. I definitely think there will be some changes, though, because obviously we weren’t the team that we were supposed to be.

3 Does “personnel changes” mean the Mets are going to sign A-Rod?
[Laughs nervously] Well, we’ll see. I hope not, but, uh, we’ll see.

    —Drew Toal

Wright’s third annual Do the Wright Thing gala, which benefits the David Wright Foundation and features a performance by members of Good Charlotte takes place at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square on Thu 15 at 7pm. For ticket info, visit davidwrightfoundation.com.
