While the New York State Senate recently passed legislation that could prohibit sex offenders from visiting certain social-networking websites, there is currently no state law that restricts where they can live. In an effort to keep offenders away from children, some officials have pushed for laws that would forbid them from living within 1,000 feet of schools and parks. But that too has consequences. “When there’s a great degree of restrictions on sex offenders, it becomes almost impossible for them to find an accepting neighborhood, and they wind up being homeless and then even harder for us to track,” says Richard Krueger, M.D., medical director of the Sexual Behavior Clinic at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. Despite the lack of official regulation, the traceable offenders seem to take up residency in clusters. “This is often because of socioeconomics,” says Krueger. “They tend to reside in less-expensive areas where there may be less of an organized neighborhood.” Here’s a look—plotted by density and zip code–at where the sex offenders live in four out of five boroughs.
