    What’s up with that?

Q What’s up with Whole Foods not having a bulk-bin section? Where can I revel in exact amounts of foods and spices by the pound?—Maja Hight-Huf, Lower East Side

A Fred Shank, Whole Foods’ national public-relations director, explains: “We get this question a lot. When we originally opened the Manhattan stores, we didn’t include bulk bins because we didn’t have a system in place to deal with the heavy volume of people. We revisited it, though, and the Tribeca Whole Foods Market opening this summer will have bulk.” Till then, cityfolk looking for a less-prepackaged grocery-shopping experience should check out Fairway Market’s (2127 Broadway between 74th and 75th Sts; 212-595-1888, fairwaymarket.com) fine selection of bulk grains, dried fruit and granola, much of it organic; Westerly Natural Market (911–913 Eighth Ave at 54th St; 212-586-5262, westerlynaturalmarket.com) for grains, nuts, seeds, snacks, beans, sweeteners and more; and Sahadi Importing Co. (187 Atlantic Ave between Clinton and Court Sts, Brooklyn; 718-624-4550) for superfresh olives, nuts, seeds, candies, dried fruit, spices and pickled veggies.
