Q What’s up with the mirrored panels underneath the Port Authority bus overpass at 42nd Street and Ninth Avenue? I can’t tell you when they went up, but all of a sudden they were there! What’s their purpose?—Joey Jalleo, Manhattan
A We hate to burst your bubble, but the mirrors you’re seeing don’t serve any specific purpose; they’re part of a community initiative by the Port Authority to beautify (and brighten) the stretch of Ninth Avenue that sits under the bus ramp. The gigantic top-view mirrors are part of a $60 million renovation project that includes the installation of a new heating system; the replacement of some 40,000 cubic feet of old concrete; and the painting of steel beams in a worrisome combination of red, lime and forest green. “The decision on the colors was made in 2000,” says Port Authority representative Alan Hicks. “We worked with the surrounding community to come to a decision.” (Thanks, midtown.) The project is slated for completion in two months.—Genevieve Ernst
