Dear Old Schooler: One of my friends has started going out with somebody who drives me bonkers. We all want our buddies to date nice, cool people, of course, but it gets worse: My friend knows my opinion. How do I prevent future get-togethers from being really awkward? Is it okay to tell my friend I’d prefer to hang out with him on his own?—Puzzled in Queens

Life is short. You should say what’s on your mind. If you don’t like a person, don’t spend time with them. Okay? I’ve had friends with boyfriends I didn’t like. But I was younger then, so I thought differently. See, when you’re young, you try to please everybody. When you get to be my age, you do whatever you want. Now, I would tell my friend that I don’t like her boyfriend, and I really don’t want to spend time with him. If she likes him, that’s fine. That’s her life. But I have control over my life. And if you end up in the same place with them together, be cordial, smile, and then tactfully leave.
